Darren Snow, instructed by Helen Duffield, Royal College of Nursing, commenced the defence of a community mental health nurse before a NMC Fitness to Practice in Cardiff this week. The case concerns a murder in June 2017 where a mental health patient, discharged from hospital back into the community under the nurse’s care, murdered his grandmother whilst suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. In the criminal proceedings the murder case was resolved with a plea to manslaughter on the basis of the underlying mental health condition. The NMC case is that failures in care led to a decline in the patient’s mental health after discharge which that contributed to the tragic events.
