Acquittals in Yewtree Trial

Tana Adkin QC and Clea Topolski and Nicholas Rhodes QC and Louise McCullough were instructed by Ola Yusuf of MW Solicitors in respect of a case arising out of Operation Yewtree. The Defendant who was by now an elderly man with multiple disabilities and in poor health had been the Officer in Charge of various children’s homes in the 1980s. He was initially arrested in 1993 after complaints were raised by children who had visited his home, but no further action was taken at the time.

The investigation was re-opened in 2015 when a resident of one of the children’s homes reported serial and serious sexual abuse by the Defendant back in the 1980s. The police then re-opened the investigation into other Complainants . A first trial took place in June 2018. Extensive third party material was obtained to discredit the former resident of the children’s home and the Defendant was acquitted of counts relating to him but a jury was unable to reach verdicts on the other two Complainants who had first complained back in 1993. A re-trial in January 2019 necessitated a change of Counsel. Careful analysis of the evidence provided to first trial and skilful strategy lead to further acquittals on the re-trial. The verdicts conclude a saga spanning over 30 years.
