Michael Goodwin is a highly regarded and busy criminal practitioner. He acts as a leading junior, is regularly led by Queens Counsel and acts as a junior alone. His practice encompasses the full range of criminal offences, with a particular emphasis on serious criminal defence work.
Michael represents both privately funded and legally aided clients at all levels. He is regularly instructed by companies and professional organisations.
When required Michael will ensure continuity of representation from a first appearance in the Magistrates’ Court, through the Crown Court, until all avenues of Appeal have been exhausted.
Michael is available to advise as required, and can be contacted outside office hours with ease. He will regularly attend at solicitors’ offices to assist in the preparation of cases and to advise. He is able to arrange video conferencing within chambers to instructing solicitors, prisons and abroad.
Michael also prosecutes offences of serious crime. He specializes in the prosecution of fraud, commercial crime and money laundering. He is instructed as a Grade 3 Advocate on behalf of The Crown Prosecution Service (London, including Central Case Work Directorate, & Surrey.) He is preferred counsel instructed on behalf of the Serious Fraud Office. He has considerable experience prosecuting on behalf of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs, the Department of Trade & Industry and RCPO. He frequently advises on and conducts private prosecutions and complex regulatory cases for Local Authorities including Westminster City Council, and Trading Standards.

Practice Profile
Michael specialises in substantial cases involving serious fraud, white collar and commercial crime, both for the defence and prosecution. This includes all aspects of complex fraud, corporate crime, money laundering, regulatory offences and confiscation.
He has particular expertise dealing with large multi-handed cases, complex conspiracies and cases with an international dimension.
His familiarity of murder and manslaughter cases, serious offences involving drugs, armed robbery, and gun related crime, enable Michael to bring to any case a significant level of experience and judgment.
He is well equipped to advise on the bringing of abuse of process applications, as well as related proceedings involving restraint, asset recovery, cash forfeiture and deprivation orders.
He has considerable knowledge and experience dealing with Public Interest Immunity issues and applications, and related disclosure arguments, gained from his background of prosecuting serious criminal cases, representing HMRC, working with NCIS and other investigatory bodies over the years.
He is very proficient at preparing and presenting substantial cases, both for the prosecution and defence, and where necessary working as part of a large legal team.
He accepts instructions in VHCC cases.
Michael was junior counsel for the Crown instructed by the Serious Fraud Office in the successful prosecution of the Chairman of one of the UK’s largest computer manufactures in a multi-million pound fraudulent trading and breach of copyright legislation case. He has recently been instructed as junior counsel to advise the Serious Fraud Office during a detailed investigation into unlawful conduct of a subsidiary of Balfour Beatty plc. The investigation in October 2008 resulted in Civil Recovery Order Proceedings in the High Court, whereby Balfour Beatty agreed to a settlement payment of £2.25m.
Other areas of work include representing: claimants at VAT Tribunals, police officers before disciplinary tribunals, interested parties at inquests, and defending court martial and parole hearings.
