Biography

A Queen’s Counsel since 2006, Mr Cox has an extensive portfolio in areas of speciality including:

Homicide
Serious Fraud
Regulatory Work

In recent years he has defended and prosecuted in a number of high profile HSE cases involving fatalities. He has also defended major companies in relation to large scale environmental incidents, and represented public bodies and professional clients at a number of high profile inquests (particularly those involving fatalities in the course of school trips).

R v M & R v U (Defended youngsters involved in “gang attacks” in which there were difficult issues of joint enterprise)
R v Newton (Defended man charged with murder of prostitute, complex scientific issues)
R v AM (Defended Somalian who had limited language charged with a contract killing)
R v Cook (Prosecuted teenager charged with murder of young child whilst baby-sitting)
R v Bonallie (Defended 18 year old charged murder arising from a group attack on a mentally handicapped victim)
R v Hardacre (Defended man charged with sexual abuse and drowning baby in bath)

FRAUD, MONEY LAUNDERING AND MAJOR DRUGS
Defended 2 solicitors charged with money laundering Defended in another major international laundering case.

Defended in large scale fraud concerning the evasion of VAT on ‘tied oils’.
Defended in large scale commercial fraud.
 
Defended in conspiracy trial concerning the importation and supply of class A drugs. These were cases which involved issues concerning surveillance techniques, PII and the compatibility of the Regulation of  Investigatory Powers Act 2000 with the ECHR. One of these cases was H v C [2004] AC 132, the leading case on disclosure/PII.

HEALTH & SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL LAW
Wide experience prosecuting and defending cases arising from fatalities in quarries, train derailments, by electrocution. Before taking silk, whilst on the Attorney Generals “A” list, reguarly prosecuted high profile health and Safety cases. Both as a junior and in silk has defended public bodies and commercial organisations in relation to health and Safety  prosecutions.

Experience of river pollution prosecutions brought by the Environmmental Agency. Recently instructed to represent a major international company in relation to a prosecution arising from a massive acid spillage.

INQUEST LAW
Experience of inquests. In recent years has represented teachers at high profile inquests concerning deaths of school pupils in the course of outdoor activities and school trips. Has a particular interest in drowning cases, having appeared in a
number of cases arising from drowning in pools and in the course of school trips/outdoor activities. Has represented public bodies at high profile inquests.
